bemusing musings of a bewildered brush-wielder

boots

DSCN0046Boots, 18″ x 24″, oil on linen

I sat in my studio for a long time today, and I didn’t know what to paint.  Then I took off my boots, and started painting.  These boots just somehow addressed the idea of labour, of the exchange of labour for money.  Here is the painting that resulted.

love it! It definitely resonates a hard day of work…one can almost feel the sweat on the brow and the stiffness in the neck.

Yes, yes — immediately it of course brought Van Gogh to mind — but then it is really grubby and earthy. A different aesthetic than other things I’ve seen of your work. Keep painting!

I’m confused over the difference between Comment and Leave a Reply. I need a tutorial.

This wonderful painting reminds me in a gentle, wholesome way something that the late Harry Chapin said. He said there are two kinds of “tired”…if I may paraphrase, he said one (the “bad” tired) involves stress, discomfort, mental anxiety and similar emotions due to everyday confrontations and indecisions; whereas the other (that is, the “good” tired)is a result of an honest hard day’s work to support your family, resulting in a gentle spirit and proud tired. This painting to me is that of a “good” tired. It evokes feelings of the simple life, and the notion that it is the simple honest work that all to often is shadowed.
